Music.
No Theory!

What is it all about?

'Music. No Theory!' is a course that focuses on the foundations of music. Where do melodies, chords and bass lines come from and how are they used to make hit songs?
'Music. No Theory!' is an interactive music-making course for aspiring young artists at any level. Our music industry professionals teach the skills needed to break down any song into its fundamentals, and how to use that knowledge to create original music in any genre or style! Throughout the course, we start by examining simple songs, gradually making them more advanced.

'Music. No Theory!' is practical and immediately useful, presented without the tired dreariness of most music 'theory' courses. Learn music with your ears, hands and heart. After taking this course, students will understand the musical elements that separate the great songs from the rest, and how to apply those insights to their own music.

Why do we call it No Theory

Learning Music Theory can be boring and difficult for many children. Music lessons too often tend to be either fun but lacking key learning points or boring packed with lots of information that the children will never remember because they weren’t engaged

We have worked hard on a programme to change that. Our sessions are fun, interactive and relative to the music children are listening to at home. It’s because of this approach that calling this programme a music theory course does a disservice; our students learn so much more than the names of notes   We are all working professionals in the music industry and are passionate about sharing our expertise and love of music to a new generation.

What will students learn?

First off, the fluffy stuff you might hear from music advocates:

“Playing a musical instrument engages practically every area of the brain at once, especially the visual, auditory, and motor cortices. As with any other workout, disciplined, structured practice in playing music strengthens those brain functions, allowing us to apply that strength to other activities”

Learning music theory alone develops Mathematical Skills, Reasoning, Engineering Comprehension, Spatial Awareness and Logic.

More specific to this course students have the opportunity to establish and build on the fundamental modules in music theory as well as basic music production, songwriting and composition.

We try not to set hard and fast modules because our experience tells us that interactive and evolving sessions have the biggest impact, creating a deeper level of understanding on the areas covered.

Having said that, we always have set goals that we expect to cover during the course. These include but not limited to –

STUDIO TIME!

We can offer an extra service that many other workshops and courses can’t offer. Studio time at one of our 3 high end studios in Brent, London.

At just £120 for a full day or £10 an hour we offer time in the studio working with our session musicians and executive producer to bring tracks worked on in the setting to life, this has proven a very popular addition to what is already a quality packed course.

FAQ

Will all members of the team deliver the course every week?

No. While all our team members are very capable, their presence will depend on the subject for that week and what the targets are. Using team members in this way enables us to keep the course affordable and accessible for even the tightest budget.

How is the quality of the course monitored?

After each session, the team members fill in a report delivered to the line manager at My Century Audio and the setting. Regular ‘check ins’ between the setting and the team ensure expectations are being met.

Can I choose what is covered?

While we are the industry professionals, we do also accept that we don’t know your students like you do. To that end, we will meet with your subject lead at the very beginning to discuss a strategy and what you would like to have covered as priorities. Further to this, regular meetings are arranged between the team and the setting during the longer courses to realign expectations and to discuss any diversions from the learning programme that the lead or team may feel is needed

Will there be a written record of progress?

We set worksheets and homework for students. Students will learn to place notes on a staff, the difference between staffs, note lengths and lots more which will be displayed in fun worksheets completed in sessions and at home between sessions.
